The Super Distortion was the main sound on Jerry’s Wolf & Tiger guitars from 1978 in Wolf, and 1979 delivery of Tiger, through December of 1981 - from Waldotronics’ research, it seems Jerry switched to the Super 2 pickup during the early 80s, then once again back to the Super Distortion (also known as the Dual sound) from July 1988 and onwards. Also, this makes a great pairing with the wiring bundle if you’re looking to do your own DIY Jerry mods!
About the Super Distortion:
This pickup started a sound revolution. Replacement pickups simply didn’t exist before the invention of the Super Distortion® in the early Seventies. The Super Distortion® (and its original 3-conductor version, the Dual Sound®) was the first pickup specifically designed to kick a tube amp into total overdrive, and is still the standard by which all other high-output pickups are measured. The Super Distortion® has a perfect blend of power and tone: both single-notes and chords jump out of the amp and fill the room (or the track) with a wall of sound. The balance of tones is classic — thick, boosted mids, big lows and fat highs. About the SDS-1:
It might look like a Strat® guitar pickup, but the SDS-1™ adds punch, gain, and warmth reminiscent of the best old soapbar pickups. The adjustable pole pieces don't pull as hard as regular rod magnets, so you can get the pickup closer to the strings for stronger output. The highs are less exaggerated and the bottom is deeper than most singles for a rounder, darker tone. The bar magnets that power the SDS-1™ are ceramic, but the sound and feel are very similar to Alnico-equipped soapbars, partly due to the big steel pole pieces and spacer bar. This type of magnet structure also has noticeably less magnetic pull than standard rod-magnet pickups, even though the output is very high for a single-coil.
