Waldotronics "Early Tiger" JGJC-1 Buffer
Mike Wald, aka Waldo, creator of Waldotronics, has been researching Jerry tone and unveiling each detail to our community for over 15 years now - as more and more information has emerged over the years, Waldo has been able further refine each piece of the Jerry tone puzzle. Finally, after years of quests, he has been able to create more accurate versions of the actual buffers used on Jerry’s buffer-equipped guitars.
The JGJC-1, also known as the “Early Tiger” buffer is Waldo’s tribute to John Cutler, who made the first buffer installed in Tiger, Jerry’s guitar built by Doug Irwin. It was used onstage from its delivery to Jerry in 1979, all the way through December of 1981. It features some NOS components, as used in the original, and has a unity gain output.
We recommend that each buffer is paired with the period-correct pickups and pickup wirings, although feel free to mix and match! The Tiger buffer sounds best with Dimarzio Dual Sound pickups used in series/parallel configuration. It is slightly “thicker” sounding when compared to the Spud G-1, or Spud JFET II buffer models, but creates the unmistakable sizzle you are looking for in your tone. I particularly like the extra thick mid-heavy output of this buffer. I currently have this JCJG-1 equipped in my blue stratocaster you may have seen in some videos. If you are looking for mid 80s series/split configuration wirings, please see the Tiger buffer.
